Who is Nasir Yusuf Gawuna?

Nasir Yusuf Gawuna is a Nigerian health personnel, politician, and businessman who serves as the Governor of Kano State. He was the deputy Governor of Kano State from 2018 – 2023 under Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Nasir Yusuf has been a member of the All Progressives Congress(APC) since joining them in 2013. He was previously a member of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) from 1999 to 2013.

Nasir Yusuf Gawuna is a Muslim and was born on August 6, 1967 in Dawakin Tofa, Kano State. He completed his primary and secondary education in Kano where he attended Government Technical College. He also attained his Bachelor of Science degree in building technology from Bayero University, Kano.

Nasir Yusuf Gawuna’s Career

Nasir Gawuna served as the chairman of Nassarawa Local Government Area(LGA) from 2003 to 2011. This was under the Governorship of Ibrahim Shekarau. He has also worked with two other Governors of the state.

Nasir Gawuna holds the position of Chairman of the Kano State Taskforce Committee dedicated to addressing matters related to COVID-19. Gawuna held the position of Commissioner for the Kano State Ministry of Agriculture from 2014 – 2022.

His initial appointment came from former Kano State Governor Engineer Rabiu Kwankwaso. Following the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, on August 5, 2018, Gawuna was appointed to the role by Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the Governor at the time.

Additionally, Governor Ganduje chose to keep Gawuna as his running mate for the 2019 Nigerian general election. On May 7, 2022, the former governor of the state, Ganduje, publicly endorsed Gawuna as his chosen successor for the upcoming 2023 Governorship Election in the state.

On September 20, 2023, the Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal ruled in favor of Gawuna, declaring him the winner of the 2023 governorship election in the state. This decision came after the initial victory of Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) was invalidated by the tribunal.
