George Akume’s Biography

George is a native of Benue State, from the Wannune Tarka Council Area. He was born on the 27th of December, 1953. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Master’s degree in Industrial and Labour Relations from the University of Ibadan, Oyo State respectively in 1978 and 1986.

After his Master’s program, he went into politics fully as a contester for the Governorship seat of Benue State. He contested under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and became the Governor of Benue State for two terms, from May 1999 to May 2007.

Under the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), he was elected as the Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Benue North-West senatorial district. From June 2011 – June 2015, he became the Minority Leader of the Senate.

In 2019, he lost to Senator Orke Jev, for the Senatorial seat of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). On the 21st of August, 2019; Akume was appointed as the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

His most recent accomplishment is his appointment as the new Secretary to the Nigerian Government under the new administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
